Training Workshop for Gender Division Staff

A Significant Step Towards Combating GBV. The Gender Division, supported by the Zambia Centre for Communication Programmes (ZCCP), conducted a vital training workshop focused on the SASA! Together methodology at Family Legacy Lodge in Lusaka from 22–27 July 2024. This event aimed to equip staff with the skills to prevent and respond to gender-based violence (GBV).

Permanent Secretary Ms. Mainga D. Kabika emphasised the importance of collaborative efforts in combating GBV, highlighting that 47% of women are survivors of intimate partner violence. She thanked USAID and GIZ for their support in responding to GBV through ZCCP projects and praised the SASA!r Together methodology for its community support and effective GBV case management. Ms. Kabika not only participated in the training but also received certification, demonstrating her commitment to the cause.

SASA!, a Kiswahili word meaning “now,” is a phased, community-led strategy that aims to prevent GBV and HIV. It involves starting awareness, providing support, and taking action to foster productive relationships between women and men.

Executive Director of ZCCP, Mr. Johans Mtonga, reinforced the urgency of addressing GBV. He explained that SASA! Together is a participatory approach that explores power imbalances, the root cause of GBV, and promotes benefit-based activism.

The training enhanced the capacity of staff to challenge power imbalances and coordinate responses to GBV. The workshop concluded with the presentation of certificates to participants, symbolising their commitment to applying their new knowledge and skills.

Ms. Kabika expressed confidence in the staff’s increased knowledge of GBV concepts and response strategies. She also acknowledged GIZ’s support in enhancing the Gender Division’s website for GBV communication materials.

The workshop marks a significant milestone in efforts to combat GBV. With enhanced skills and knowledge, the Gender Division is better positioned to foster gender equity and create a safer environment for all.

Together, we can end GBV.
